Just dropping by to gloat about a few old books I bought at an antique book shop today....they arent valuable, but they are something I was pleased to have stumbled across.

1)The Teach Yourself History Of English Literature To The English Renascence 500-1650 (Volume two) (1950)
2)The Sydney Morning Herald Best Letters to the editor Volume 2 Edited by Jenny Curtin (2001)
3)The End Of The Beginning Speeches by the Right Hon. Winston S Churchhill Compiled by Charles Eade (1943)
4)History Of England (Lord Macaulay) To the death of William III Vol.III (I already have Vol's I and II) 1967

Scored them for $28 cheers

I love our local antique book store, it smells of port royal tobacco and antique books...the floorboards creek, all of which adds to the atmosphere of purchasing dusty antique books in a historical township.

Cool ...I have purchased some bargains at that store, once I was quite literally sweating and trembling at the counter when I purchased a very rare antique book I had been after for quite some time for $18 which I knew fine well was worth well over $200 for a copy in poor repair.
It's in excellent condition...so would be worth about $380+ (leather bound)..

Smile I felt like a book crook, was nervous, waiting for the owner of the store to tell me there had been some sort of mistake with respects to the cover price of the book....but no, after fumbling a little with some loose change in my purse, and dropping a few gold coins on the floor, I escaped with a bargain, quite exhilarating really, he obviously had no idea what this book was worth.

And for those interested, he has a copy of mark Lathams Diaries up in the Royal section (why I have no idea, when the political section right next to it would have been most appropriate, though you need a chair to reach it thus I have no idea what the price of it is...(I am a short person)....

Probably about $6, max!

Smile...I already have this, so left Lathams diaries there for someone else.

Book browsing is a decadent self indulgent sport, so is something you have to do by yourself, alone, without the kids, friends etc with you or else they get annoyed..... at one point I sat on the floor and crossed my legs to scan the lower shelves today, I got tired of standing.

It's ok, they know me in there.

I was in there for over an hour today...time certainly flies when you're losing yourself in one of your favourite pastimes.

Smile

I will just add, it's only a second-hand book shop with an antique/old book section/nook, and these are the best stores to bag a bargain as any store which refers to itself as being either vintage or antique generally has the 'antique/vintage' price tag to go with it...even when in most cases, they are both terribly over priced and rated.

It's a good second-hand book dealer you want, one with an old/vintage book section preferably in a historical town where there is an abundance of elderly people/retirees, as they just take their old books there to exchange them for new ones, this and often have no idea what their 'gem' is worth, to a collector this is.

Though always check the other sections as I have found some vintage bargains among the general shelves also...and if you think you have found something special, ask them to put it under the counter for you as you need to go to the bank first, (run home, google it if you have to)...then return if this book is what you're after, a bargain!

Smile I have done this a few times, and dare say many other people who collect books do this also, just to be sure particularly if the books marked as vintage and you need to be sure before you buy it.
