Are Orientals friendly by nature? I want to adopt a cat but I want one with a friendly nature, maybe a talkative one too.

Oriental cats are highly intelligent, have a well developed emotional response, (ie will mourn their owners death , will even starve to death in your absence, and if you plan to have more than one, best to buy siblings from the same litter or else expect war if adopted at different life stages. Because they are highly intelligent, they are rather mischievous , and get bored.

If you don't live in a quiet area, (road wise) and or plan to keep them indoors, then teach them to walk on leads right away, as soon as you get them...little bits at a time. Also, nows the time to start throwing scrunched up balls of paper or a hair-scrunchie ...(they will fetch like a dog and walk on leads also)...but they need to be able to grip the object, so no cricket balls or anything lol.

Make sure you feed them fussy cat VIP cat mince right from the start...and 1 chicken neck in the morning, offering them a small handful of biscuits (for their age group) throughout the day...they aren't the sort of cat to over eat and or get fat, so they will tell you when they are hungry. When we first got Anubis and Osiris, they would have half a portion of cat mince (fresh) at night, and a chicken neck and biscuits (specifically suitable for kittens) in the morning and throughout the day.

Orientals are a touchy feely cat, will socialise and kiss all members of the family, but generally favour and sleep with one. They are loyal and devoted cats, impossible not to spoil. Trying not to is futile, they will own you within moments of entering your humble abode....of which they will make their castle, you my friend will become their servant, staff.

If you are lucky, they will make you their favourite servant, and shower you with more love than you could have ever imagined. They are ultra active, especially as kittens, expect a few damaged or stolen possessions. My boys went stealing neighbourhood children's toys , doll pillows, etc....then would stash them in their secret *wink* den behind the lounge.

Word of advise, try not to disturb this den if you can help it, or else if something important goes missing, they will find another place to stash things, then you wont know where to look. They do this more so in pairs however, and whilst my Osiris still does this from time to time, it's nowhere near as prolific as it was.....it was starting to get embarrassing when his brother Anubis was alive, we hadn't long moved here, was a great way of meeting the neighbours though. "Oh here, is this your child's toy, My cat stole it" hmmmm....I will never forget the day Anubis came trotting home proudly with a doll cot pillow in his mouth, he thought he was the ants pants. lol

Thing is, they get bored, so if you plan to keep them in doors make sure you have plenty of toys and equipment around, ideally they need a cat-gym, they aren't like other cats.

In Thailand, they call them the dog-cat....(for obvious reasons) and for over 300 years they were worshipped by mankind, hence their "I am better than you posh nature"...they never really did forget this.

Smile Make sure you ensure they don't have flat/concaved chests, because a flat chest = heart problem. They are prone to heart problems particularly when purchased of a backyard breeder.... contact the appropriate organisation and have them put you in touch with a responsible breeder, you can google breeders , if the breeder has a reputation to keep...ie is the president of the Cat Fanciers association, all the better. Because if something goes wrong, they will replace the kitten if it's a defect related health issue.

Dont buy runts, pay the $1000 to $1200 they cost, or be warned, you might end up with a cat with a serious heart defect which may only live for 4 or 5 years tops.

They are demanding, this and don't like being left alone, so if you aren't home during the day...best to buy them as a pair from kitten hood. But if bough singularly, they tend to be more doting on their owners, to there are pro's and con's ...depending on your needs.

When Anubis died, Osiris became even more people orientated and wouldn't leave my sight.

They have an incredible memory, if you piss them off, expect war.

They ruminate and stew over things for days, up to a week....it's called being in "Disgust" both Siamese and orientals are prone to this due to their high intelligence and capacity remember and highly developed emotional response.

A couple of years ago when I had my first and only 2 seizures (never had one since)...my cat sounded like a police siren apparently, when something is wrong, they will let you know, and like a dog, they will get up at the window if they hear a noise outside, and sometimes growl. Hence they used them as temple cats. You might notice a nitch towards the end of their tail, like a kink......there's a legend to this, was a place for the royal heiresses to keep their rings while bathing. Smile

How true this legend is I'm not sure, but my Oriental has the slight kink....can feel it, but you cant see it.

:)Prolly a genetic thing ...there would be a rational explanation for it I'm sure, possibly recurrent line breeding i'd say, same reason dodgy breeders produce flat chested cats.

After owning an oriental you wont want to won anything else....and make sure you don't buy the apple headed variety,(round head like a moggy not as angular) get the European head type ask them about this as soon as you call their cattery, to save yourself the trip)

Also, what colour were you thinking of?

I personally like Havanas and Ebony's...(browns and blacks)

WARNING

Never buy these cats simply because you like the look of them, or as a status symbol, you really need to have a genuine love of this breed, and animals in general...and believe me, they can tell if you don't.

They will be miserable if your hearts not in it, and will reward you by tearing up your house in the event your interest flails.

These cats require no less than several hugs, cuddles, and to be held like babies, cradled in your arms. They love gentle massage and their tummy stroked in the same direction as their hair. Stroke them around their jaw, under their chin, and around their ears....they will often gently dudge you to do this, and will lick you on the nose or some other part of your face to let you know you have spent too much time on the computer, at which point, you had best give them a cuddle or expect protest.

Yes they have a loud raucous resonant voice, and will make unusual sounds, their vocals are unique in that they will talk, (not like a human) but make odd vocal sounds, altering their pitch.

They don't get on very well with ordinary cats, (I don't know why) though will tolerate them if they have to and are introduced to a household when very young which already has a different breed of cat, but appear to prefer the company of those they appear to communicate with better..(their own kind) ....my Osiris had a friend (de-sexed female black Oriental) who was a local resorts managers pet... they used to travel in pairs, would only socialise with each other despite there being various other cats in our street to play with.

They also hold grudges, NEVER SMACK THEM...or they will seek revenge by pissing in your shoe or shitting in your work bag..(My daughter and her father learned this the hard way) My daughter pushed him off the lounge because she wanted to sit there, and this was all it took for Osiris to articulately fill one of her school shoes with urine...without having spilled a drop on the floor.

If you plan to allow them outdoor access, then you wont require a litter tray once they have progressed past kitten hood..., they are a dignified animal, and wont do their mess inside, unless sorting revenge... are in "disgust".

When they have settled into your home, (keep them in for the first month at least) then place the litter tray on your back step, show them where it is...this tells them that ding their business is now an outdoor activity. Dont just open the door and throw them out...leave the door ajar, slightly open, and allow them to take their first steps outside ....leave the door open, don't chase them to try and get them back inside. Once they have come back in after a little peek outside, close the door, and do this again tomorrow. Best done in the morning, when they have a full bladder.

Let them come and go when they please, never tell them when they should go outside.

They will let you know when it's time....and keep the litter tray inside for as long as you have to...until you notice they no longer require it, (they will stop using it of their own accord) like children when potty training,....then you know it's time to leave the tray outside all together, and leave it there until it's no longer being used outside also....(don't regularly clean it out when it's outside, because cats don't like pooping in their own mess, so will go find a nice clean patch in the garden...this is what you want.

Smile Also...buy a decent sized litter tray, those small ones they market as cat litter trays are useless...better off with a large rectangle shallow container about meter long, half a metre wide, and 9 inches deep. Can buy these up at the garden centre. buy home-brand garbage bags and line them with these, I used to place my cats tray into the garbage bag then fill with litter...so you couldn't see the tray itself, and was convenient to remove.

Most importantly, just treat them like a child, a baby, part of the family, they love it. They are prone to fetishes, careful about wool sucking, (it's a rare fetish, but needs to be discouraged)....my cat has a bed sheet fetish, it's impossible to make a bed around him..the minute he see;s me go to the linen closet, he's on the bed.... before I've even stripped off the old sheets.

Osiris still takes the odd item behind the lounge from time to time...socks, undies, dolls clothes especially,...basically small items he can carry .... he's a lil bugger. He gets a little jealous of my daughter sometimes, so takes her things. We know where to find them, he always takes them to the same nook. This said, he adores the kids, just gets a little tired of my daughter dressing him up in dolls clothes I think...ie, putting bibs on him etc...it's probably why he steals them. lol

Smile.. I tied a Xmas decoration (a bell) to his collar at Xmas, and the next day, I came home to a Xmas tree which had all the bells removed off it's lower branches. This is what I mean by revenge. They are a dignified animal, be careful not to insult them as they are highly intelligent and will hold grudges, will not forget like other cats will once you have fed them. It's like they plan what they will do to get back at you.

Lol, I bet you are wishing you had never asked....sorry, I will stop now.

Several hugs and cuddles a day... in other words, if you don't have the time to dote on them, don't have them.

They are not the pet for everyone, you have to be a real animal lover and cat lover to own one...this and be prepared to become their equal, never force these cats to do something they don't want you to, or expect war.

Smile Enjoy.

Osiris was almost identical to this little man when we first got him....this little one is about 8 months old...very important not to let them get over weight, they are meant to be thin, and if you over feed them they will be at risk of heart failure.

Lots of people make the mistake in thinking they are skinny...so need more food...

Big mistake.

Your vet will tell you this though. And try to find one which has a thing for exotic cats if you can.

Smile It helps...because they know how to relate to them when they need to visit the vet.

Well, they are, no where near as developed as humans , but they do have thoughts, feelings, and reason in their own way.

It's a proven fact.

Dogs and cats will grieve for their deceased owners, in varying degrees, will not forget abuse.
My parents own a racist dog who cant be let out around dark skinned children has to be watched like a hawk when taken to the park, he was a rescue case, (I stole him from a house) and gave him to my parents because the kids down the road where I lived had killed the rest of the litter, sick little muppets. Obviously these dark-skinned kids were raised by individuals who have little regard or respect for animals themselves, and this is why Charles has a thing about dark skinned children. Only children! He is fine with dark skinned adults.

Elephants even have funerals...did you know this?

Animals have feelings and emotions , perhaps not as developed as humans, but they do have them.

Ever had a depressed cat refuse to eat for a week after watching his brother get skittled on the road? He was drinking, just wouldn't eat.

Smile It's important to remember this when owning a pet I think.

I think the most important thing to remember with these cats is that like you say, they are majestic, have an air of regalness about them, this and demand to be treated like an equal, ... People who like to dominate their pets really need to own a dog, not one of these cats because they can become nasty and naughty like spoilt monkeys, and will demonstrate disgust if your hearts not in it.

If you cant bring yourself to kiss them on the head , (they like this)...and just want an ornament to impress your friends with, then these arent the cats for you.

I have owned Siamese and exotic cats all my life...my parents bought a royal Sorel Simese (no longer exists), before I was born) I would do anything to re-create this type, .... if you can imagine a sable (goldish/dark brown) oriental cat with black points with the most magnificent blue eyes you had ever seen ...when I say royal blue, the only way I can show you is by scanning an image of "garngi" when I next go over to my parents place. My mother has this pic whereby he is sitting on her lap , she's wearing a silk blue long dressing gown, (matches his eyes) whilst she's breast feeding me. He was actually my fathers cat, but when my parents divorced, he chose me, and slept with me after my father left.

I will scan a pic of me when I was about 2 years old with him sleeping like Osiris does head on my pillow, laying on his back like a human only Garngi (the royal Sorel) is wearing a pair of sunglasses, and so am I...and both of us had fallen asleep this way...lol

Hence why mum took the pic.

Back in the late 70's they messed with the Royal Soral Siamese breed, because snobs refused to aknowlege them as a breed, (they wanted to CHANGE how the oroginal Siamese looked) which were true to the Siames type, as they were wanting them to become more and more angular and exotic looking, (which he was...had a stunning angular head) gorgious wedge, but they were less anorexic looking... it was just they decided to create/define a breed called Tonkanese, so did away with the blue eyes to make Tonks a breed of their own, different to Siamese, given Tonks have aqua eyes, so was the end of the Royal Sorel Siamese.

Truth is, they were the original type, the first brown cat have been brough to the west from Thailand. They look quite different now...have become more extreme and are much more prone to heart defects than their more genetically diverse/less extreem ancestors.

Basically, (genetically) Orientals are solid coloured siamese, and have fewer genetic problems than siamese because the pool is more diverse, they have been outcrossed over and over with solid coloured cats to have aquired their (solid coloured) type.

And just one more thing...when you go to buy one, let them choose you, take the one which comes to you and gives you more attention than the rest of the litter, see, they choose you, not the other way round.

I wish you all the best with finding your feline familiar.

Smile....remember, they can be a jelous animal, so dont buy an adult , they never really get over their first owner, my father tried to take Garngi with him to QLD on the back of his motorcycle, though he refused to eat for a week once he got there, so fretted teribly, then dad had to ride him all the way back again, and the minute he was home, he ate. It's a wonder he survived the trip actually, but then again, Garngi was used to riding around on the back of dads motorbike , had been doing so from a young kitten.

So... had he not been used to it, then he probably would have stressed and died on the back of the bike when dad took him.

______________________________________

I promise to put a pic up of Garngi.... lol..my father called him this because dad said he looked like a block of hash when he bought him hmmmm..."Gunja" so hence Garngi. I only found this out when I was about 16 years old...lol

My dads an animal lover, just like me, this and talkes with them too... I think I inhereted this love of cats from him, as my father has always loved all cats, has never been without one, most of which drape themselves like a collar around his neck while he's reading or on the computer....rather than disturbe his cats, he will move his book around the cat...so I would often see my father holding his book up awkwardly above his head to read it, because one of his cats were comfortably sprawled across his chest.

lol

Smile My mums an animal lover also, but not quite like us ...re- how we let them assume the people position in our beds. When Osiris beats me to bed, gets there before me, I will make myself comfortable around him, without disturbing him, whereas my mum would probably throw him off the bed , make herself comfortable, then allow hi to sleep at the end of her bed, not head on pillow, or under the covers when it's cold.

Also, due to their lack of body fat and thin coat, they dont have as many layers of fur as ordinary cats, so they feel the cold.

They like to get under the blankets with you during winter, and the sheets during summer.

They like their self-time also...(about 4 hours a day) whereby you shouldnt disturb them. Osiris has self time every morning after breakfast, going outside to do his business, on my daughters bed, and doesnt like to be disturbed. I make my daughters bed around lunch time because of this, because as soon as she's gone to school, he's in her bed.
