The number 5 and letter V

There are numerous references throughout V for Vendetta to the number 5 and letter V, which itself represents "5" in Roman numerals:

* The story begins on the 5th of November
* V is the 5th letter from the end of the alphabet
* The girl V saves and houses is named Evey
* The title of each chapter begins with the letter V
* V introduces himself with the five words, "You can call me V."
* The fireworks when V blows up the houses of parliament spell out the letter V.
* The character V is seen reading and quoting from Thomas Pynchon's novel, V.
* Dr. Surridge's diary covers five years
* Beethoven's fifth symphony is used by V and noted for the prominent use of three short notes and one long, which is the Morse Code identifier for the letter V (the BBC used this code as a call sign during World War II, most famously in the sense of "V for Victory").
* The series identifies V as the prisoner from Room V at Larkhill Internment Camp.
* The access to V's hideout goes from the closed Victoria tube station, the damaged sign of which resembles a sideways V when Finch locates it.
* V's personal motto consists of the Latin phrase Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici (By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe) - five words that begin with the letter "v". V identifies the origin of the phrase as Faust.
* Guy Fawkes Night happens on 5 November.
* The government consists of five branches, associated with the five senses.
* At Larkhill, V is injected with Batch "5".
* V's last word, at the end of the series, starts with a V.
* When Finch takes LSD and tries to replicate V's experience at Larkhill, he has an epiphany and runs from the camp. As he revels in his new found "freedom", he thinks

Vaulting, veering, vomiting up the values that victimized me. Feeling vast. Feeling virginal... Was this how he felt? this verve, this vitality... this vision.

He then concludes with the French terms "La Voie" (the way), "La Vérité" (the truth), and "La Vie"(the life). His French pronunciation of last term sounds like the name "V", and as he says it he stands with his arms up in the shape of the letter "V".

I plan to purchase Thomas Pynchons novel V. (If I can ) after having finished reading .......V is for vendetta.

V. is the debut novel of Thomas Pynchon, published in 1963. It describes the exploits of a discharged U.S. Navy sailor named Benny Profane, his reconnection in New York with a group of pseudo-bohemian artists and hangers-on known as the Whole Sick Crew, and the quest of an aging traveller named Herbert Stencil to identify and locate the mysterious entity he knows only as "V." It was nominated for a National Book Award.

TIME wrote "In this sort of book, there is no total to arrive at. Nothing makes any waking sense. But it makes a powerful, deeply disturbing dream sense. Nothing in the book seems to have been thrown in arbitrarily, merely to confuse, as is the case when inept authors work at illusion. Pynchon appears to be indulging in the fine, pre-Freudian luxury of dreams dreamt for the dreaming. The book sails with majesty through caverns measureless to man. What does it mean? Who, finally, is V.? Few books haunt the waking or the sleeping mind, but this is one. Who, indeed?"

The New York Times, called Pynchon "a young writer of staggering promise" lauding his "vigorous and imaginative style", "robust humor" and "tremendous reservoir of information".

In 1963, the novel was awarded a William Faulkner Foundation award for best debut novel.

My son was who introduced me to the movie

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0434409/ recently, it's the 2005 remake of the original...though the novel is more graphic, and so much so that the author refused to watch the films depicting his novel, due to their being somewhat censored.

An Annotation of Literary, Historic, and Artistic References
in Alan Moore's Graphic Novel, V For Vendetta.
Madelyn Boudreaux, madelyn@gothics.org
April 27, 1994
Last Revised: August 13, 2004

http://www.enjolrasworld.com/Annotations/Alan%20Moore/V%20for%20Vendetta/V%20for%20Vendetta%20Revised%20-%20Complete.html

The entire story has appeared collected in paperback (ISBN 0-930289-52-Cool and hardback (ISBN 1-4012-0792-Cool form. In August 2009 DC published a slipcovered Absolute Edition (ISBN 1-4012-2361-3); this includes newly-coloured "silent art" pages (full-page panels containing no dialogue) from the series' original run, which have not appeared in any previous collected edition.

I am still waiting for the correct edition, the book shop who ordered it in for me were sent the wrong ISBN series.

Very disappointing, though these things happen.

The hard cover sells for up to and beyond $100.... though I found a cheaper hard cover (new) here, so will call my book store and tell them to cancel the order in the morning.

Tick, be weary of unregistered handles, I use them occasionally if my account signs itself out because I have left a post incomplete and gone to do something ...cook dinner etc, though I never post under an unregistered version of my own handle "mellie" simply because I cant, ....the idiot who is doing this, is using some sort of character altering program so they can get away with it.

eg, cut and paste their unregistered handle into google or onto a yahoo message board reply form, then hit send or search.... you will see exactly what I mean. Odd characters are embedded, looks something like %$%^ when you post the fake mellie onto yahoo.

Anyway... best thing is to just ignore the unregistered posters, if in doubt.

Getting back to books...

V for Vendetta (Library Binding)
~ Steve Moore (Author), Alan Moore (Author), David Lloyd (Author), Andy Wachowski (Author), Larry Wachowski (Author) ....is the book I'm desperately trying to hunt down...this and the comic compilation as defined above.

Not as easy as you might think as only a limited number of copies are circulating in Australia, so they have to be purchased in either the US or UK, then shipped here.

If I get stuck, I'm going to resort to purchasing an audio version online...annoying, but at least I can lay down and listen to it at night in the dark with my Ipod I guess.

Lol Rudd probably burned them all...the mans a censorphile.

Naaa, just not a publication being promoted here in Oz, so where there's no demand, there's limited supply.

Same with Rudds autobiography, the Lu Kewen (Mandarin) edition, published in China, I cant get hold of that either.

Annoying!
